Rugby Monks

The Occasional and Eclectic Musings of a Rugby-Playing Medievalist

Doctor_Ray is not a medical doctor - he is a philosophy doctor. He can't explain that mysterious rash, but if you're having an existential crisis, he can tell you to take two readings of Epicurus and call him in the morning.

Doctor_Ray is a history teacher at a private school in the Los Angeles area where they let him indulge his passion for medieval history.

Doctor_Ray plays rugby for Santa Monica Rugby Club. He was part of the teams that won the USA Division I national championship in 2005 and 2006.

Doctor_Ray is an alumnus member of Enigma, UCLA's science fiction and fantasy club. He got involved with the club while he was becoming a philosophy doctor, and is grateful for all the wonderful friends he made as a result. Some of them are even his friends in LiveJournal, too! He enjoys both table-top RPGs and LARPs (or as he prefers to call them, live-games). He prefers live games because he gets to dress up, brandish cool props, and play make-believe. He believes this helps keep him young, which in turn helps him connect with his students.

Doctor_Ray is happily married to his perfect soulmate. She shares most of his passions, and cheerfully supports and indulges him in those she does not share, like drinking whisky and playing rugby. He cannot imagine a better match, and is grateful every day for her intelligence, passion, support, and love. Also, his live-game costumes would be nowhere near as cool without her, as she is a talented seamstress as well as a brilliant historian in her own right.

Doctor_Ray was born and raised in New Hampshire, home of the Old Man of the Mountain, a geographic anomaly in the White Mountains, where several stone ledges formed the shape of a human profile . Daniel Webster said of Doctor_Ray's home state: "Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men."
